Happy Friday! Hope everyone had a bright 4th of July. If you’re looking for something to do this weekend in D.C.– plan a picnic at the UNBELIEVABLY GORGEOUS Dumbarton Oaks gardens in Gtown.
It had been yearss since I walked through the gardens and they are even more breathtaking than I remember (could have sworn they were free back in the day though). They were virtually empty when we went, with plenty of green spaces to amble peacefully through. We plopped our pink blanket down in a couple of different areas (money’s worth, check!), ate our Cava and sipped some bubbly (non alcoholic, of course..). The lush green paths seem to spill every which way; orange trees adorn walls overlooking an unexpected tranquil pool below; a large vegetable garden makes it hard to believe you’re in a city at all..
Dumbarton Oaks is much more than just a garden– it’s a Harvard University research institute, library, museum, and garden, gifted by Robert and Mildred Bliss in 1940. Visit the Dumbarton site to read more about this and to learn about the current exhibits in the museum. You can tour the museum for free but you need to grab a (reasonably priced $10) ticket to tour the grounds.
