If you are looking for a great summer picnic spot, Gravely Point Park does not disappoint. This park, located in Arlington (off of George Washington Pkwy) has ample space for setting up a blanket (or you can grab one of the picnic tables), with views of the river and the Washington Monument.
What makes this park so amazing, though, is how close the planes fly overhead as they land at Reagan Airport. It can get a bit crowded during the day with people picnicing, throwing frisbees, or biking through (still pleasant), while the evening is a quieter experience, and the planes are best spotted at night.
There is also a nice restaurant/bar right on the river near here, called Indigo Landing.
